Unsung Hero of Compassion Award
“For as long as space endures,
And for as long as living beings remain,
Until then may I, too, abide
To dispel the misery of the world.”
— His Holiness the Dalai Lama
By honoring individuals who embody compassion in their everyday acts, The Unsung Heroes of Compassion Award acknowledges that all acts of compassion make an important difference in the world. They allow us to express our spirituality, honor our highest nature, and care for our fellow human beings. They enable us to experience the disenfranchised as our teachers, and to learn that in helping them, without the expectation of return, we help ourselves. Finally, they remind us that acts of kindness must never be hindered by fear or complacency. There is no need to wait even a moment to improve the world.
Gavin received the Unsung Heroes of Compassion Award, with 50 other recipients from around the world, at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose California, on May 16, 2001. The award is sponsored by Wisdom in Action. His brother Craig accompanied him to the event.
Excerpt from the Wisdom in Action communication informing Gavin about the award:
It is my great honor to inform you that you’ve been selected to receive a special acknowledgment from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In receiving this acknowledgment, you will represent the countless others worldwide who, like you, practice compassion and kindness in their daily contact. In sharing your story, and the stories of the other 49 “unsung heroes”, we seek to increase awareness, and inspire others to find their own paths to compassionate action.
